FOR NASA No Easy Answer for Next Space Destination

(AP/Michael Stravato)

There are only a few places in space where humans can go in the next couple of decades. In the next few years, new technology should be developed enough to know exactly where. President Barack Obama plans to divert billions of dollars from the Bush moon plan toward better rocketry.
By SETH BORENSTEIN
WASHINGTON, KOMPAS.com – Where to next? It's a simple question that NASA can't answer so easily anymore. The veteran space shuttle fleet is months from being mothballed and the White House has nixed a previous plan to fly to the moon.

For the first time in decades, NASA has no specific space destination for its next stop, although it has lots of places it wants to go. Future space flight, NASA officials say, now depends on new rocket science and where it can take us.

That uncertainty may not sit well with Congress, which will be grilling NASA chief Charles Bolden on Wednesday and Thursday in the first hearings since the George W. Bush moon mission was shelved.

There are only a few places in space where humans can go in the next couple of decades. NASA wants to go to all of them, with the ultimate destination, as always, being Mars.

"The suite of destinations has not changed over time," NASA deputy administrator Lori Garver said in an interview. "The moon, asteroids, Mars — if you're going to go anywhere — is where we are going."

But with any itinerary there is a first stop. So what is that?

Check back in a couple of years. That's when new technology should be developed enough to answer that question, Garver said. President Barack Obama plans to divert billions of dollars from the Bush moon plan toward developing better rocketry.

"The best way to get anywhere ... is really invest in technologies that will reduce the cost, reduce the time, reduce the risk and so forth," Garver said.

Some of those technologies seem like science fiction. The possibilities noted by experts inside and outside of NASA include the equivalent of an in-orbit gas station, electric-hybrid rockets, nuclear thermal rockets, inflatable parts for spaceships, and methods of beaming power between Earth and space.

Former astronaut Franklin Chang-Diaz, who has developed a new type of electric propulsion engine called VASIMR that the NASA leadership mentions specifically, said this new emphasis is especially welcome because six years ago NASA killed its advanced rocket technology program.

"We clearly need the technology leap if we really want to go to Mars," Chang-Diaz said. "We are not going to Mars on chemical rockets."

Chemical rockets are what has always been used to get into space and they require carrying lots of expensive fuel. Electric propulsion would get better mileage, but versions so far don't have nearly enough thrust to get off Earth.

To some critics, however, technology isn't as important as a destination. Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Fla., who will be chairing Wednesday's Senate subcommittee hearing, plans to push for some kind of commitment and specific plan of action.

"The president is the only one that can lead the space program, and he ought to set a goal," Nelson said in an e-mail. "He needs to say where we're going and let NASA design the architecture to do it."

Former NASA associate administrator Alan Stern said he's waiting to hear what NASA officials outline in the Capitol Hill hearings, but he too has concerns about not having a precise destination.

"We need a destination and a timetable and that's really lacking," Stern said. He said that relying on technology to dictate a location "sounds like a program to nowhere."

Because human spaceflight is about inspiration, science and international cooperation, Stern said, "you need a specific destination, a proper noun, something that's capitalized."

The outline for much of NASA's future was sketched out by an independent spaceflight panel the White House appointed last year. Led by retired Lockheed Martin Chairman Norman Augustine, the panel laid out options, including canceling an immediate return to the moon and instead proposing a "flexible path."

Panel member Chris Chyba, a professor of astrophysics and public affairs at Princeton University, said just because the flexible path doesn't point to a specific starting point doesn't mean it's without a goal.

"You begin by saying what your goal is, not what your destination is," Chyba said. "And the goal is the human expansion into the solar system."

The spaceflight panel charted a possible roadmap, based on the easiest trips first, such as a flight to the moon but no landing. Next might be any of a handful of points in space where the gravitational pull between the Earth and the moon, or the Earth and the sun are equal.
Such locations are places of engineering importance because future space telescopes and other science satellites are slated to go there and this would allow astronauts to repair them. But they risk ridicule as flights to nowhere, Chyba said.

Then the panel suggested landing on a near-Earth asteroid, followed by flights to and around Mars and landing on a Martian moon. The panel also noted that landing on Earth's moon is "an obvious alternative" to Mars, maybe after an asteroid mission and serving as a possible training stop for other flights. The space agency also might still opt to go to the moon before anywhere else, NASA's Garver said.

Several experts believe the most sensible place for astronauts to go first is an asteroid.

"If the goal is ultimately the human exploration of Mars," landing on an object near Earth is a logical first step because it's easier, says Donald Yeomans, chief of NASA's near Earth object program.

What asteroids offer is a lack of gravity, making it easy to leave. Landing on larger objects, such as the moon and Mars, would require the extra but expensive thrust that chemical rockets provide, demonstrating the need for a hybrid vehicle.

Visiting an asteroid would have the appeal of some place new, would provide legitimate scientific study and could even help scientists figure out how to save Earth from some future killer asteroid, Stern said.

Another of the key points in future spaceflight will be the ability to stop in space to refuel or even switch vehicles, said NASA's new chief technologist Bobby Braun.

The future for NASA is not about future space destinations, contends MIT astronautics professor Ed Crawley, a member of the White House-appointed panel.

"It's about the journey," he said. "It's a journey of technology. It's a journey of discovery. It's a journey of capability. It's a journey away from the cradle. At some point we have to learn how to leave the planet."

The Image of Boy's Ghost Watching Builders Demolish His Old School

Spooky: The ghostly image of a young boy appears in this photograph of demolition work at Anlaby Primary School, near Hull, which is said to be haunted
KOMPAS.com - The ghostly image of a young boy was captured on camera as builders demolished an old school building. John Fores, 47, insists the spectral figure was not present when he took the picture of the part-demolished brick building.

But when he looked back at the images he spotted the boy, aged around eight with short hair and wearing a dark top, standing on the right of the picture looking into the camera.

Mr Fores was carrying out demolition work on the site at Anlaby Primary School, near Hull, East Yorkshire. He took several pictures on his mobile phone to record the demolition work.

He said: 'I took the pictures just after noon. I took a few and at the time didn't notice anything.

'When I put the pictures on the computer and I saw the figure, the hairs on the back of my neck stuck up.

'I couldn't believe what I had seen. I didn't believe in ghosts, but since I got this picture I am not so sure.'

The image of the young boy is exceptionally clear, but the builder insists he has not altered the picture in any way.

The school, which is still in use, was built in 1936. Caretaker Gordon Bradshaw, 54, said it has a reputation for being haunted.

He said: 'I've been here 29 years and the kids have always said there is a ghost at the school. I've never seen anything though.'

Rob Taylor, of the Hull Paranormal Ghost Society, said: 'I have never seen anything as clear and as distinctive as the boy in the picture.

'I am aware of people using mobile phones and getting orbs and misty images. It needs further investigating.'

Intel Hacked at Same Time As Google

Daily Mail
Google Buzz will enable Gmail users to create status updates and read and comment on the updates posted by their friends
KOMPAS.com - Intel has revealed that it was targeted by a "sophisticated" hacker attack this year at about the same time as a spying probe that hit Google. Intel disclosed the attack in a regulatory filing late Monday. It doesn't necessarily mean that Intel was infiltrated or that the attackers were the same ones that targeted Google.

Intel spokesman Chuck Mulloy said Tuesday that the attack on Intel wasn't broad-based like the one that hit Google. He said Intel isn't aware of any intellectual property being stolen.

Intel, like other major corporations, faces constant computer attacks. Mulloy said the company was only pointing out there was a connection in terms of the timing of the Google attacks as part of a disclosure to investors about the company's risks.

The disclosure comes amid heightened fears of state-sponsored espionage targeting corporate computer networks. Google revealed last month that its network was attacked from inside China and that the intruders stole intellectual property — an attack that Google says could cause it to leave China.

Google said at least 20 other companies were targeted as part of the attack, but those companies weren't identified. Software maker Adobe Systems Inc. and Rackspace Inc., a Web hosting service, have acknowledged being targets.

Intel is the world's largest maker of microprocessors, the "brains" of personal computers and servers, with about 80 percent of the worldwide market for those chips.

Top 8 Bad Effects From Lack Of Sleep You May Forget

1. Increasing the desire to eat fatty Foods
Lack of sleep can eliminate the hormone that regulates appetite. As a result, the desire to eat high fat and carbohydrates will increase. You want to eat a high calorie intake. If during the 2 nights you are not sleep soundly, It can trigger excessive hunger. This condition occurs because the ghrelin hormone stimulatesappetite enhancer, and lessen leptin hormone as appetite suppressant.

Over time, this can cause weight gain. In research done on identical twins by the University of Washington found that People that sleep 7-9 hours every night, the average body mass index was 24.8, almost 2 points lower than the average Body Mass Index (BMI) of those who lack of sleep.

2. Weaken the body’s antibody
Based on the JAMA study, people who slept less than 7 hours per night could be 3 times more prone to feeling cold. Other research found that in men who sleep less will fail to maintain the immune response or a normal immune after receiving a flu shot. The people that get lack of sleep, antibodies that work after the vaccination only lasts a maximum of 10 days. This condition is very dangerous.

Therefore, improve the quality of sleep, to boost your immune system. If too little time to sleep your immune system could be disrupted.

5 Signs Showing You've Had Enough Vegetables

Shutterstock

KOMPAS.com - Besides macro nutritions (carbohydrate, protein, and fat) we also need micro nutritions (vitamins and minerals), some of which come from vegetables and fruits. Vegetables and fruits can fulfill our body's need for fibre.

To get the most benefit from vegetables, ideally one should consume 400 gr per day. How can you tell if you've had enough vegetables?

According to Wied Harry Apriadji, consultant for nutrition and healthy cooking, the easy way to find out about this is to notice your defecating based on these five indicators:
1. Pooping everyday
2. Being able to defecate automatically (without much straining)
3. Done in two minutes
4. You feel that it's completely finished afterward
5. Your feces floats

If those indicators are fulfilled then it's safe to say that you've consumed enough fruits and vegetables everyday. It's possible that some people might think they've had enough vegetables, but their bodies disagree and they don't get those good indicators above.

Please remember that your daily vegetable consumption should also consist of three colours: green, orange, and white. For example: soup with beans (green), carrots (orange), and mustard leaves (white). Consuming only one color everyday is still not enough.

Green vegetables have side effects?
Some even say that consuming green vegetables everyday might cause excessive uric acid. Is that true? "It's wrong," Wied confirmed.

It's possible that some people already suffer excessive uric acid, but not because of green vegetables. It's true that green vegetables contain purin, which has been accused of raising the uric acid level in the body, but the purin content in green vegetables is insignificant and can't raise the uric acid level by much.

Another opinion is that green vegetables consumed in large quantities could cause constipation. "That's also wrong," Wied debunked the myth.

The constipation occurs if the daily vegetable consumption isn't balanced with enough liquid. Vegetables in general are high in fibre, and if this isn't balanced with water it will harden and cause constipation.

"It's not the vegetables (causing this), but the lack of liquid consumption."

Astronauts Take Shutter-Raising Spacewalk

(AP/NASA)
In this Monday Feb. 15, 2010 image provided by NASA, an old docking adapter, the Pressurized Mating Adapter 3 (PMA-3), held by the Canadarm2, is relocated from the Harmony node to the open port on the end of the newly-installed Tranquility node . The adapter will provide an extra parking spot for visiting ships and buffer against micrometeorite hits. Tranquilitys Cupola is visible at bottom center.

CAPE CANAVERAL, KOMPAS.com
 – Astronauts ventured out on the third and final spacewalk of their mission Tuesday night and unwrapped the International Space Station's phenomenal new lookout — the best window on the world that orbiting crews have ever had. Robert Behnken and Nicholas Patrick had a multitude of chores to complete outside, but the most anticipated was the unveiling of those seven windows, a fitting grand finale to the shuttle mission's spacewalks.

"Let's take the covers off," shuttle commander George Zamka urged as the spacewalk got under way.

"It may be station's smallest module, but good things come in small packages," Patrick observed.

Behnken and Patrick had no trouble removing the stiff insulating blankets from the domed lookout. "Its gleaming metal looks terrific," Zamka said.

Next, Patrick went on to unlock the shutters. After that, the astronauts inside were going to crank open the shutters, and if everything went well, enjoy the biggest and best views of Earth ever afforded orbiting astronauts.

Mission Control wanted the shutters opened while the spacewalkers were still outside so the two men could intercede if something jammed. Barring a problem, Behnken and Patrick were under orders to stay a safe 10 feet or more from the windows after the shutters were raised. The last thing NASA wanted was to have one of them inadvertently kick a window or bang it with a toolbag.

The $27 million observation deck is part of the new space station room, Tranquility. Space shuttle Endeavour delivered the European compartments last week. The Italian-built dome — 5 feet tall and nearly 10 feet in diameter — is designed to offer sweeping 360-degree views of the home planet and outer space, as well as the space station itself. It's not just for the crew's viewing pleasure; a robotic work station will be installed early Thursday, providing direct views for astronauts when they operate the station's big mechanical arm.

Six trapezoid-shaped windows encircle the dome. In the middle is a round window 31 inches across; it's the largest window ever flown in space.

During normal operations, the space station crew will be able to keep the round window unshuttered most of the time, along with a couple others. But the windows facing along the direction the outpost is orbiting will need to be closed, except during robotic operations, to protect against a micrometeorite strike.

The six shuttle astronauts began their ninth day in space listening to a recording of Jimmy Buffett's "Window on the World." Mission Control played the song to set the night's mood.

The spacewalkers had to finish plumbing work on Tranquility before moving on to the dome. They opened up the valves on an ammonia coolant line that they hooked up during Saturday night's spacewalk. Tuesday night's spacewalk represented the last of the Endeavour crew's space station construction work. The shuttle will depart Friday.

Back at the launch site, meanwhile, NASA has delayed the next space shuttle flight. Discovery had been scheduled to blast off in mid-March, but a string of unusually cold weather stalled preparations.

Liftoff is now targeted for April 5. Only four more shuttle flights remain.

Kaskus Threatens to Move from Indonesia to Singapore

Kompas/Lasti Kurnia
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com — The Department of Communications and Information must rethink the effects on online businesses if it is to persist for its draft on multimedia contents. If the draft is ratified by the ministry, then some internet businesses may boycott the move.

One major player who has threatened to leave Indonesia is Kaskus, Indonesia's largest online forum service. Kaskus chief marketing officer Danny Oei firmly stated that the company will leave Indonesia if the draft is ratified.

He believes that the government is biased if it only sees the negative effects of the internet without looking at the positive ones. While actually, preventing the negative effects takes effort from the users themselves, such as restraining from visiting porn sites.

"If it is done (ratified), well it will be a surprise for us and we may leave Indonesia," said Danny on a press conference together with other internet business players at Hotel Akmani, Jakarta, Wednesday. According to him, the draft would be a bad sign for the future of multimedia and the freedom to express oneself in Indonesia.

Danny stated that Kaskus might consider relocate its HQ to Singapore.

At the same time, the Legal Aid for the Press has also prepared some measures. Its chief of the non-litigation division claims to have prepared legal measures to be done before the ratification, or even after if the draft did come through. "We plan to send an open legal warning to the Department of Communication and Information, and also to ask for the Supreme Court to examine the case."

According to Arief, the considerations for the draft, which are based on the Press Law, Filming Law, and the Freedom of Information Act, have threatened the freedom of the press by allowing potentials for banning or news censoring. The Council of the Press has stated that the draft is against the Press Law and even the 1945 Constitution of Indonesia. (Caroline Damanik/C17-09)

Google Donates USD 2 Million to Wikipedia

WIKIPEDIA
KOMPAS.com - Google, the Internet's most profitable company, is giving $US2 million ($A2.2m) to support Wikipedia, a volunteer-driven reference tool that has emerged as one of the Web's most-read sites.

The donation announced Wednesday matches the largest grant made so far to Wikimedia Foundation, the nonprofit group that oversees the 7-year-old Wikipedia. Ebay founder Pierre Omidyar also donated $US2 million to Wikimedia six months ago through one of his investment arms.

The latest largesse has catapulted Wikimedia beyond its $US10.6 million revenue target for its fiscal year ending in June. That goal had looked ambitious, given that it represented an increase of more than 20 percent from $US8.7 million a year earlier.

But the worst recession since World War II evidently didn't dampen support for the Internet's most popular encyclopedia, which has more than 14 million entries written and edited by some 100,000 unpaid contributors in about 270 languages.

Wikimedia, which gets most of its revenue from donations, has collected contributions from more than 240,000 individuals so far this fiscal year, mostly in small sums.

The outpouring has allowed Wikipedia to expand while keeping its Web site commercial free, spokesman Jay Walsh said. "We intend to keep it that way, too."

Wikimedia, based in San Francisco, plans to spend about $US9.4 million of its revenue this year, mostly to pay salaries and benefits to a staff of more than 30 people. The second-biggest expense is for operating Wikipedia's Web site.

The donation is a pittance for Google, which ended December with $US24 billion in cash. Google makes much of its money from ads that run alongside Internet search results, many of which send people to Wikipedia.

In a statement, Google co-founder Sergey Brin hailed Wikipedia as "one of the greatest triumphs of the Internet".

Chinese Schools 'behind Cyber Attacks on Google'

AP
Claims: Cyber attacks on Googles Gmail accounts have been linked to two educational institutes in China, according to reports
KOMPAS.com - The cyber-attack on Google’s computers which may result in the search giant pulling its Chinese operations has been traced to two Chinese schools. Two education institutions – Jiaotong University and Lanxiang Vocational School, which has links to the Chinese military – were involved in the internet attacks on Google and up to 30 other U.S. companies, according to the New York Times.
Its report claims security investigators have traced hacking to computers at the institutions. The Shanghai Jiantong University is one of China's top academic institutions.
Officials told the Times they had not heard about the Google attacks being traced back to their computers but indicated a willingness to investigate.
A professor at the school didn't rule out the possibility that the attacks came from the school, but said they might simply have been someone ‘experimenting with their hacking skills’.
Adobe and Rackspace have confirmed they were also targeted in the attacks, which may have begun in April 2009 - earlier than previously believed.
In January, Google revealed it had been victims of a ‘highly sophisticated and targeted attack’ involving an attack to hack the Gmail accounts of human rights activists in China.
It responded by threatening to pull out of the country unless it was able to operate uncensored. Google has said it is prepared to close its China-based operation including shutting its offices in the country.
However, the Chinese government has denied any involvement in the cyber-attacks, said to have exploited a security weakness in Microsoft’s Internet Explorer web browser. Officials have publicly insisted Google obey its restrictions against showing links deemed to be subversive or pornographic. Google’s Chinese search engine remains in operation and its results are still censored.
